Safe things to check first

Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.

1Confirm the range is plugged in fully and the breaker for it hasn't tripped at the panel.
2Lift the burner caps and grates, then check for spilled food crusted around the igniter tips.
3Make sure the oven isn't left in Sabbath, delay bake, or lock mode from the control panel.
4If you smell gas, close the shutoff valve behind or beside the range, open a window, and step outside before calling.

Do you work on both gas and electric ranges?

Both, plus dual-fuel and induction. Gas work means igniters, valves, orifices and safety valves. Electric means elements, infinite switches and relay boards. Induction means coils and power modules. Tell us which you have when you call us.

My oven bakes cold. Is that fixable or is it the whole stove?

Almost always a part, not the appliance. A drifting temperature sensor is the usual culprit, sometimes the control board or a cracked element. We test the sensor's resistance cold, so the diagnosis isn't guesswork.

One burner is dead but the rest work. Worth a service call?

Yes, and it's usually a small repair. On gas that points at one igniter or a blocked orifice. On electric it's often the element or its receptacle. Isolated failures are simpler than whole-range problems.

Can you get to a range in a tight galley kitchen?

That's most of the homes we visit. Rowhouses and walk-ups don't leave much clearance. We protect the floor, walk the range out carefully, and check for a gas shutoff before anything moves.

Should I keep using a stove that smells like gas?

No. Shut the gas valve, don't flip switches, open a window and leave the room. If the smell is strong, get out and call your gas utility first. Once it's safe, we'll trace the leak.

How do I speed up the repair?

Have the model and serial number ready — usually on a plate inside the oven door frame or under a burner. That lets us bring likely parts on the first trip instead of ordering after we arrive.
